In my senior year of college, studying gender politics in Egypt, I spoke with an Islamic Feminist who told me, very politely but essentially, "stop trying to import your version of feminism here. Go clean up your own back yard."
I'm happy to know that this experience of Global Southerners telling well-meaning but farsighted American children to work on America first, rather than try to "help" elsewhere, is getting bigger. We have a lot to clean up at home.
Thanks for this essay!
